Frequenty Asked Questions
At FLOW Physical Therapy, we support your health journey with personalized care, whether preparing for cancer treatment, managing lymphedema, or determining a treatment schedule. Referrals may not always be required, depending on your insurance. We're here to help you feel your best.
“Do I need a referral from my physician?”
In Montana, patients have direct access to physical therapy, so a referral is not required. However, some insurance companies do require it.
“Why would I come to physical therapy BEFORE cancer treatment?”
It is extremely helpful to get baseline measurements before surgery and to provide guidance on protocols to optimize healing. Clients also receive education on lymphedema and pain management. We have seen improved outcomes in those that receive these visits.
“What is lymphedema?”
Lymphedema is an accumulation of protein-rich fluid and presents as chronic swelling in a limb and/or trunk. It can occur after surgery involving removal of lymph nodes and/or after radiation, which can damage lymphatic vessels. It is easiest to treat/manage if addressed early by a certified lymphedema therapist. Treatment includes manual lymphatic drainage, compression, exercise and skin care.
“How often will I come in for treatment?”
Most patients come in 1x/week for 50-60 minutes and this frequency ideally starts 2-3 weeks after surgery. Once goals are met or mostly met, the frequency of visits may be reduced, or clients will transition to an independent program. If other side effects arise from long-term treatments, those issues can be addressed as well. Those with lymphedema or high risk of lymphedema should be seen every 3 months during the first year for screening.
